{"id":199,"date":"2020-12-01T12:42:50","date_gmt":"2020-12-01T11:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacelab.unipi.it\/?page_id=199"},"modified":"2024-03-19T18:12:49","modified_gmt":"2024-03-19T17:12:49","slug":"stratospheric-flight-service","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/spacelab.unipi.it\/?page_id=199","title":{"rendered":"microHAPS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-317 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/spacelab.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/HAB-1-530x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacelab.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/HAB-1-530x1024.jpg 530w, https:\/\/spacelab.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/HAB-1-155x300.jpg 155w, https:\/\/spacelab.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/HAB-1.jpg 746w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px\" \/>At the Space Systems Lab, we have developed the capability to fly small payloads to the <em>&#8220;near-space&#8221;<\/em> region with the\u00a0<strong>micro-HAPS<\/strong> stratospheric platform (<strong>\u00b5HAPS<\/strong>). <a href=\"http:\/\/spacelab.unipi.it\/?page_id=33\">Have a look at some of our flights!<\/a><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Main facts:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">about 1.5 hours residence time in the stratosphere at altitude in between 18 km and 38 km, with a total flight duration of 2.5 to 3 hours<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">payload mass up to 4 kg; typical size: 30 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm box<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">real-time, low data rate telemetry and telecommand through a LoRa link<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">up to 30 W power supply to the payload through solar panels (for flights in daylight only, of course!)<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">launch from anywhere in the Italian territory, within the ENAC allowed zones<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">very low cost, short\u00a0 duration pre-flight preparation activites.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Payloads already flown include telecom experiments (ISM 2.4 GHz band RF-noise characterization and AIS maritime signal detection, together with MBI Srl) and UniPi&#8217;s solar cell and attitude determination experiments. A nighttime optical payload by our colleagues at the University of Padua was flown in July 2021.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Balloon Altitude Control System (BACS) is under advanced development. BACS allows for up to 5 days permanence in the stratosphere. Eventually, BACS will enable the implementation of an automated balloon station keeping scheme, based on AI techniques (reinforcement learning), to maintain the platform within a given range (e.g., 50 km) from a given ground location.
