The first measurement campaign was recently conducted on Mt. Etna, Sicily. This initial campaign demonstrated that the proposed measurement approach based on tethered balloons is feasible and reliable. The Volcanosonde instruments were attached along the tether and lifted to about 400 m above ground level. Measurements were carried out over several days, using both tethered and free-flying balloons. The campaign produced very good results and provided useful practical feedback, which will be used to improve and refine the next measurement activities planned within the project.
